The Bridge….

12/11/17 -Vicksburg @6:30 PM

I arrived at the old 80 bridge (Over the Mississippi) and it was closed to any pedestrian foot traffic.    The security guard had been briefed that we might be coming as we had made inquiries a few days before, but never heard back. He noted that the “commissioner” would be in by 8 AM tomorrow, if we wanted to try and see if he would open the bridge for us (Which he said has never happened before to his knowledge).   They do open it up for certain events however.

I then called the sheriff’s department to see if I could walk behind the RV on the I20 bridge or if they would be willing to escort us.  They took my number and said someone would be contacting me.  We waited about 15 minutes and decided to go and check out I20 which we deemed to risky to try and cross and by the time we were back, there were several police offiers at the bridge entrance.

The officers held strong, despite a special call to the sheriff to see if an escort were possible, it was not.  So McGuire and I headed back over to the Louisiana side, so that I could start walking from where the old 80 bridge leaves off.

I go back to the start of the old 80 bridge and the Superintendent is there and invites me in.  We had a great talk and he agreed they would open the bridge for me, provided they could escort me over.  The rest is history, as they say, see below for some pics, whew – crisis adverted…
